Being an avid console gamer and having enjoyed the Assassin's Creed series thoroughly to date, trying out the handheld version was a no brainer. The iPhone version is actually a port of the older Nintendo DS version that was released in 2008, however there have been vast improvements in graphics and audio. Altair's Chronicles takes place in a time before the console games, and like the console games you must use stealth as a primary strategy, often taking to the rooftops or ledges to avoid confrontations.

Excellent Visuals And Sound
Graphically Altair's Chronicles is fantastic for an iPhone game. A fair amount of detail was put into the backgrounds which helps a great deal in immersing yourself in the storyline. While you are in the city you will hear the ambient sounds of chatter and dealings of a busy street. The voice acting is done pretty well for the most part the accents are believable. Just like in the console version, the main assassinations zoom into the action and show a close-up of the kill in true Assassin's Creed fashion.

The controls in Altair's Chronicles consists of an on-screen virtual D-pad with buttons for both a strong and quick attack as well as jump and block. In certain situations you will have access to an additional button for actions such as using a grappling hook or to assassinate. Using the virtual D-pad can be trying at times unless you are fully used to it. Since you can't physically feel which direction you are pressing, you may find lining up with thin ledges or climbing ladders may take a few tries. I feel I must also mention that jumping from ledge to ledge can sometimes be frustrating and you will most likely die more often doing this than anything else in the game. It's a good thing the game saves your location very often so when you don't have to replay a long stretch of level.
As you traverse the rooftops and ledges you will find blue orbs scattered about. Collecting these can be used to upgrade your sword attacks or your health bar. There are times when you must engage in a mini-game to proceed, games such as pick-pocketing an unsuspecting guard for a key or interrogating a thug for information. The mini-games are not a huge part of Altair's Chronicles, but offer a change of pace to the ledge jumping and sword swinging that may get repetitive.
