Being a parent myself I know what it's like going over a friend's house for coffee or visiting your parents. Many times you or your spouse are confined to a room feeding your baby, or perhaps your baby is sleeping in the other room and you're constantly getting up and checking on him/her. I found this app that claimed it was "Created for parents by parents. Tested with our own children". I went ahead and tested everything Baby Monitor & Alarm claims with my 1 year old son. Read on for my results.
Baby Alarm In Action
The baby alarm is designed to call a configured phone number once noise is detected. This way you don't have to be in the same room as the baby all the time. The app will first play a pre-recorded sound clip of "Mum's voice" in an attempt to soothe the baby back to sleep. If that fails, it will call you. You can also configure options such as how long noise should be detected before BM&A takes action. One thing that I didn't like here was the inability to set my own times as they are hard coded. I could choose 5 seconds or 15 seconds but I think 10 seconds would be perfect. You can also set the sensitivity level of the mic. I found I had to set it to the most sensitive however I know that all children are different and perhaps a child that snores quite loudly would need a less sensitive setting. Overall the alarm does what it claims. With the setting at 5 seconds you will get a few false alarms and at 15 seconds some babies may be in a full cry by then however the developers seem open to suggestions and are willing to listen to their paying public.
Baby Monitor In Action
The baby monitor is another feature that will play a pre-recorded sound clip of "Mum" (or whoever's voice the baby finds most soothing) when sound is detected. The monitor uses the same sensitivity and time interval settings as the alarm. This feature wouldn't work with my son as he is soothed by touch and not voice. I do see how this can be handy for some babies though.
The Nitty-Gritty
BM&A is a very simple app but has a useful purpose. I did run into a few bugs here and there, none of which I could replicate afterwards but overall it worked fairly well. There is no support for back grounding so if you close the app and launch it again it seems to hang. A simple restart fixes that. The activity log is very handy as it will save sound clips of every occasion noise was detected. One thing to note is that your phone can still receive calls while the app is running so your phone must be put in silent mode manually to avoid waking your baby. This is a very good app with potential to be even better.
Pros:
- Simple and easy to use/configure
- Designed with the mentality that not all babies are the same
- Great activity log feature
- Noise detection times are hard coded
- Few minor bugs here and there that need to be cleaned up
