Pocket Legends seems to have achieved more than many people thought was possible on the iPhone. In comparison to MMO's found on the PC it would never so much as see the light of day, but because it is on the iPhone/iPad it works very well. You are given the choice of 3 predefined classes which you can further customize through attribute points: Warriors, Enchantresses or Archers. These equate to melee, caster/healer and ranged melee classes respectively.
Pocket World of Warcraft?
Many will draw comparisons to World of Warcraft because of the instanced dungeons and many small similarities in layout and gameplay. Spacetime Studios most likely set out to create an experience as close to WoW as possible, however there are some rather large differences that should be noted. First of all this game is not an open world that is free to explore. The only areas that all players can converge in are the towns. All other parts of the game are instanced dungeons. When you enter a dungeon you are automatically put into a group playing with other players. Pocket Legends also has a fully functional friends list that will let you know who is online and from there you can instantly join their instance or send them a message or invite.
Another difference is in the character creation. With only 3 classes to choose from and non-customizable avatars everyone pretty much looks and functions the same. Your armour and weapons help in this regard as they all have different looks and are displayed on your character when equipped.

Other glaring features that are not included in Pocket Legends are guilds and an auction house. Without guilds the social aspect of the game is extremely lacking, with no one really stopping to talk to each other. You'll play a dungeon with people and most likely not talk to them again. There is a friends list which may be used here but for the most part the interactions with other players are temporary. Without an auction house you'll find many players standing in the middle of town spamming what they are selling or looking for.
A free MMO... kinda
Pocket Legends is totally free to download from the App Store. This is a move that many MMO's are doing to draw more players to their respective games. Included with this download are the first two zones (the 2nd recently added free to registered users) and 2 character slots. Pocket Legends uses an in-app purchase feature that allows you to buy "platinum" which is used to purchase additional zones (6 more at the time of writing this review) as well as varying levels of gear for your character and potions that provide temporary buffs. Even without playing with real money, Pocket Legends is a well polished game that stands above any other MMO on the iPhone. All levels including the free ones can be replayed infinitely so you won't ever be stuck at a toll booth being forced to fork over money.

If there's a better MMO on the iPhone, I haven't found it yet. Visually the game is quite detailed and appealing, and after the recent 1.4 release that utilizes the iPhone 4's retina display it's even better. The sound can be somewhat repetitive and the music is horrendous but the levels can be adjusted or even turned off in the settings. PvP in this game
works similar to a low scale version of the battlegrounds in WoW. You basically have an enclosed dungeon where you are placed on one of 2 teams, red or blue. Here you battle it out for supremacy. It may not be the most advanced pvp system out there but it will give you your pvp fix. If you look at the update history for Pocket Legends you will see that each release has brought in some huge improvements to the game. Each one seemingly bringing it closer to a World of Warcraft experience. Although Pocket Legends will never be World of Warcraft, I do believe this is as close as you will find to it on the iPhone and with a development team puts out updates at a rate of about 1 per month it should be getting better quickly. The automatic partying system makes jumping into a game quick and easy, which is perfect for the iPhone platform. On average a person playing on their phone won't have the same time allotment to play an MMO as they would on their PC. Pocket Legends is definitely worth a look even to the most casual of RPG fans.
