LogMeIn Ignition

For those who are tied to a computer because of work or are on-call 24/7...  I feel your pain, I really do.  I've been there and it has ruined more than a few weekends for me.  When I first discovered LogMeIn I used it to connect to my home PC whenever I needed a file or had to reference something stored on my computer.  I didn't need to transfer files or print remotely and I was fine with no sound or any of the other perks that came with the Pro version of LogMeIn so using the free version was perfect.
This eventually carried over to work where we would support clients in the event we needed to connect to their servers to troubleshoot.  Along came LogMeIn Ignition, which allowed me to connect to these same computers with my iPhone.  No longer was I tied to my PC on weekends.

Portability And Convenience

LogMeIn Ignition requires that you set up a regular LogMeIn account before using it.  Next you must install the client on the computers you wish to connect to.  Once that is done you will be able to connect to your PC or Mac and control it remotely as if you were in front of it.  Since the iPhone and iPad can't use a mouse, the controls are a bit different than when connecting via computer.  Just like the home screen on your iPhone/iPad, dragging your screen left pulls the entire screen including its contents to the left.  LogMeIn Ignition works the same way.  Instead of moving a mouse around, you have a mouse cursor centered on your screen and you drag the desktop around instead.  So say you wanted to put your cursor on an icon, you simply drag the screen around until the cursor is on top of the icon you want.  Double-tapping anywhere on the screen is equivalent to double-clicking and a single tap with 2 of your fingers on the screen is like right-clicking your mouse.  It may sound a bit tricky at first but I got the hang of it within a few minutes.  My connection over 3G was fairly smooth and if you can find a wifi connection it's even better.  With LogMeIn Ignition I am still able to do anything I could while connected via my PC, the only hinderance may be if I have a large amount of typing to do.  Typing on a small touch screen keypad can be a task and a half at times.

The Nitty-Gritty

Even though it is optimized for the iPhone 4's retina display, you will need to constantly zoom in and out to complete tasks due to the small screen size.  LogMeIn Ignition also comes at a hefty price if you consider how much apps usually cost on the App Store.  At $29.99 it is one of the more expensive apps on the App Store, however it works very well and I would have no problem recommending it.  If you're on call or committed to work 24/7 like I am then this tool is invaluable and will let you step out of the house once in a while without having to lug a laptop around.

Pros:
  • Connect to a PC or Mac using LogMeIn Free or Pro
  • Can use common keyboard commands (i.e. ctrl-alt-delete)
  • Runs fairly smoothly over 3G
  • Support for dual monitors
Cons:
  • A bit pricey at $29.99

Version:  1.1.170
Price:  $29.99
Size:  4.2MB
Compatible:  iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch
